Open access: funding

You should include the cost of open access publication in your grant application and project budget. The body funding your research will then reimburse these costs. Open access publication does not have to be costly; sometimes you can even publish for free. The Leiden Repository, for instance, lets you share your publication on an open access basis at no additional cost. Leiden University also has agreements in place with publishers of academic journals.

The Open Access Team at the Centre for Digital Scholarship can advise you on your options.

LUCRIS Publication Management and the Scholarly Publications repository

LUCRIS Publication Management is a Current Research Information System (CRIS) for registering, managing and reporting on the research output of Leiden scholars. You can also use LUCRIS PM to add your publications to the Leiden Repository and make them available as Open Access. Doing this ensures you comply with requirements from funder and university, but also creates more visibility for your research as the Scholarly Publications Repository is well indexed and receives over 7 million downloads per annum.

Besides output from LUCRIS, the Scholarly Publications Repository also offers additional services at no extra costs for journals, book series, conference proceedings and other publications that have a link to Leiden University. Examples of collections we have included in the past are the conference proceedings for CWTS’ International Conference on Science and Technology Indicators (STI), journals such as Arabian Epigraphic Notes, Leidschrift and the Journal of the LUCAS Graduate Conference.

 These publications profit from the existing infrastructure of our repository:

  • better indexing due to connections to harvesters such as Google Scholar, BASE, Microsoft Academic, Narcis, OpenAire and the Library Catalogue;
  • focus on longterm sustainability;
  • persistent identifier (handle; doi is currently on the roadmap);
  • connections to websites via OAI-PMH (RSS feeds coming soon);
  • a backup at the National Library;
  • quick turnaround if the articles have to be available soon;
  • complies with international requirements.

 Please contact the repository manager if you have questions about our repositories policies or if you have a collection that might benefit from our infrastructure.
